FG shuts down 5 Federal Government Colleges in Northeast

The Federal Government, on Wednesday, approved the indefinite closure of five Federal Government Colleges in the north-east due to their high security risk status.
Boko Haram and other insurgents have in reprisal attacks for a crackdown ordered by the President Goodluck Jonathan administration on members of the sects attacked schools, killing and maiming students. Some female students have also been kidnapped.
Considering the dangers to the students, the  Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, approved the shutting down of Federal Government Girls College, Munguno, Federal Government College, Potiskum and Federal Government College, Buni Yadi.
The minister also ordered the closure of Federal Science and Technical College, Lassa and Federal Science and Technical College, Michika.
A statement by Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, the Special Assistant, Media to the minister on Wednesday, explained that  candidates registered for WASSCE, NECO SSCE and BECE in FGGC Potiskum should have their examination centres relocated to FGGC Bauchi, while those from FGGC Munguno and FGC Buni Yadi should also  be relocated. The minister also approved that other students who are affected by the closure but are not writing public examinations be relocated to FGGC Bauchi, FGGC Bajoga, FGC Maiduguri, FSTC Kafanchan and FSTC Dayi.
It stated that the order, however, left the choice of the schools for the affected students at the discretion of parents, but limited to the  listed schools.
It said the Minister once again commiserated with families that lost their children during the unfortunate attack on FGC Buni Yadi in Yobe.
He said the Federal Ministry of Education would continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to improve security around Federal government-owned schools.
